Roof on the garage, bugs in the wood! / Mamy dach garażu, ale za to w drewnie są robale

Accomplishments of the week:

- The garage roof is completed now and is ready to put tiles on (this step will wait until the house roof reaches the same stage),

- Impregnation of wood is progressing (25 m3 is taking some time...),

- Construction of the ceiling joists (? - hope that's the right word) is mid-way,

- ...and as a "bonus", Mr Jacek started to construct some of the walls, to make it feel more like at home ;-).

- There is also some progress with the budget planning. We may be able to reduce the overall costs by switching from a wood stove to a pellet stove. Together with some help offered by the parents-in-law, it should bring the costs back to Green :-).

We do have one new issue though - some of the wood is infected by a bug. The defect was escalated to the wood mill together with some live samples ;-) and they should provide a replacement. No impact on overall project schedule is expected.

The weather continues to be... hmm... not exactly perfect, but fortunately the workers are not complaining too much.

Po chwilowym okresie frustracji, budowa znowu ruszyła ostro do przodu:

- Konstrukcja dachu garażu jest gotowa na położenie dachówek (trochę z tym jednak poczekamy...),

- Impregacja drewna przez teściów ;-) postępuje w szybkim tempie,

- Została zamontowana część belek stropowych- wyglądają super!,

- No i w ramach niespodzianki, pan Jacek zmontował kawał ściany.

- A ponadto, pewnie uda się nam załatać dziurę w budżecie dzięki (manualnemu) wsparciu teściów oraz zamianie kominka na drewno na system na pellety :-).

Co do nowych problemów, to w drewnie wykryte zostały robale (nieduże w kolorze białym), no i część desek jest do wymiany. Pan Jacek załatwia sprawę z tartakiem.

Pogoda wciąż jest podła - codziennie leje - ale na szczęście nie wstrzymuje to za bardzo pracy.

Moving forward with the wood / Koniec kryzysu, jedziemy dalej...

We have reached an agreement with the steel team - they were happy to leave the construction site and pay a reasonable amount of money to Mr Jacek to fix what they screwed. The walls are still pretty much straight, but he will have some fun with the ceilings and roof.
We now proceed with the garage roof. It would help a lot if it finally stops raining - it's been raining almost every day for over a month now and everyone starts to feel the famous impact of air pressure on the mood and productivity of all Polish people.

Panowie od stali z radością opuścili nasz plac budowy, zostawiając resztę poprawek do wykonania panu Jackowi, oczywiście za odpowiednim wynagrodzeniem :-). Ściany są właściwie proste, ale trochę roboty będzie ze stropami i dachem.
Tymczasem, jako że przyjechało drewno, pan Jacek przystąpił do układania więźby dachowej na garażu. Połowiczne efekty poniżej.
Prace znacznie przyspieszą, jeżeli wreszcie przestanie padać... po ostatnim miesiącu padania prawie non-stop, wszyscy już mają dość :-(

The amount of wood may not look that impressive here, but this is about 25 m3 (one full-sized truck). / Może za dobrze tego tu nie widać, ale drewna jest naprawdę dużo - ok. 25 m3, czyli pełna ciężarówka.

Still fighting :-( / Walka trwa...

I've started to feel depressed about the whole housebuilding idea today :-(.

The steel team was 100% successful in pissing off everyone including our inspector. They claimed everything was fixed yesterday but of course it was not the case. Actually the walls were straight (finally!) but now the roof is not OK. I'm not sure if they assumed we will not check, or they did not notice themselves??

In the meantime the wood has arrived and Mr Jacek can start constructing the roof of the garage. At least there we're moving forward.

Dzisiaj przeżywam lekkie załamanie nerwowe :-(.

Panowie od stali niby wszystko naprawili, ale po zmierzeniu okazało się, że teraz krzywe są krokwie dachowe. Wkurzyliśmy się nie tylko my, ale i kierownik budowy. Nie wiemy, czy robią to z premedytacją, czy też z nieświadomości, ale mamy już dość :-(.

A w miedzyczasie dojechało drewno, więc przynajmniej zacznie się coś dziać z dachem garażu...

The Crisis continues... / Wciąż walczymy...

As of today, the 'steel team' is working to implement Option #1 which is "fix it now, and fast". They stay overnight and plan to fix it completely by end of tomorrow. If that happens, we'll be back on track :-).

Still we had to delay delivery of wood by 2 days and also Mr Jacek's team has a really long 'long weekend' (6 days, good for them!). At least the weather seems to be improving (which means: finally it did not rain today! ;-)).

On the negative side, I am getting more and more frustrated by people trying to pull more and more money from us for things that are not really worth the value. Somehow they assume that if we build a house, we must be millionaires that don't mind spending one more 1000 PLN here or there. Well they're very much mistaken!...:-(

Od dziś rana chłopaki od stali ostro naprawiają krzywe słupy. Mają skończyć do jutra - jeśli im się uda, to wielkiego opóźnienia nie będzie. Trzymam kciuki.

Tym niemniej, musieliśmy przesunąć dostawę drewna o 2 dni na środę, no i pan Jacek ma dłuższy urlop - ostatnia szansa przed montowaniem drewna :-).

Poza tym, trochę się ostatnio zdenerwowałam (czas najwyższy, w końcu dom buduję, i to w Polsce...:-( ). Na każdym kroku różne osoby próbują z nas wyciągnąć dodatkową kasę, niekoniecznie dostarczając odpowiednią wartość w zamian. Wydaje im się chyba, że przy tak dużej inwestycji, jak dom, możemy szastać pieniędzmi na prawo i lewo (bo w końcu taki 1000 zł tu i tam to mały procent wartości domu...). Zawzięliśmy się i będziemy się bronić.

Status as of last Wed (Thu & Fri were off in Poland). No change in the house itself, but the garage has moved a bit. / Zdjęcia z zeszłej środy. Stal wygląda jak wcześniej, ale garaż ruszył trochę w górę.

1st Project Crisis / Mamy pierwszy duży problem...

The steel construction is complete and looks great, BUT... it's not all over yet because the our inspector refused to sign off as not all elements are straight and there are micro-deviations from the expected size. Not that I see it with my own eye, but it might actually make a difference... So the steel company was requested to get this fixed. We have 3 options now:

(1) They come and fix it on the spot this/early next week -> then we're fine.

(2) They dissemble the construction, take it away, fix it and assemble again -> we may lose a lot of time. We only have 1 week of contingency (till Jun 20) when Mr Jacek team would still have some other work to do.

(3) We go 80/20 and leave it as is -> that would be additional work & cost for Mr Jacek to make walls even again with help of pieces of wood. So unless the steel guys give us a big enough discount, it's not really an option. 

To improve my mood I focus now on interior and garden design planning.

No i mamy problem - niby konstrucja stalowa jest gotowa, ale niestety jest "krzywa", tzn. minimalnie krzywa (o parę cm w różnych miejscach), ale wystarczająco, aby kierownik budowy odmówił odbioru. Tak że panowie mają to naprawić, a my mamy problem. W tej chwili mamy 3 możliwości:

(1) Przyjadą i naprawią na miejscu -> to by pasowało nam najbardziej, ale nie wiemy, czy się da.

(2) Rozmontują, zabiorą, poprawią i zamontują ponownie -> to by była duża obsuwa, bo pan Jacek z ekipą znajdą sobie inną robotę najwyżej do 20 czerwca.

(3) Zostawiamy i wyrównujemy łatami drewna -> da się, ale zajmie to panu Jackowi sporo czasu, a nas będzie kosztować. Więc jedyna opcja, by zapłacili za to panowie od stali.

W ramach poprawy nastroju zajęłam się projektowaniem wnętrz i ogrodu.

UFO landing / Wylądowali kosmici...

Yesterday when we arrived at the site, the progress was very visible :-). At that speed, the steel guys will finish their work ahead of schedule - Friday morning. / Panowie od stali nieźle się rozkręcili - jak tak dalej pójdzie, skończą w piątek rano, zamiast w sobotę:

The construction caused a lot of excitement in the neighbourhood, with different people coming to watch it or watching from behind curtains ;-).

...and that requires a bit of explanation. Actually almost no one in Poland builds anything in such technology - 99,9% of people use traditional bricks. Why? I'm guesing it's because they need to feel the house is "solid" plus they build it "for generations". Poland is full of such 30-, 50-, 60-year-old houses built "for generations", where nobody wants to live anymore. New generations seem to prefer to build their own houses ;-).

My house is designed to combine some technology with the natural laws of physics to heat itself. As such, I'm expecting really low heating costs, which are normally quite high in a cold country like Poland. On top, the house is built of natural materials (wood etc.), and that is supposed to help me be healthy. I'll confirm when I see it :-)

...Net, this steel construction looks to people like from outer space.

"Cała wieś", a przynajmniej cała okolica przyszła oglądać stawianie konstrukcji... co jak co, ale takich dziwolągów w naszym kraju jest niewiele. 

A właściwie dlaczego nie "technologia tradycyjna"? No cóż, po pierwsze, podobał nam się projekt. Po drugie, dom ma być wyjątkowo energooszczędny. Po trzecie, drewno jest fajne i ekologiczne :-). No i wreszcie, nie podzielamy przekonań większości Polaków, że dom musi być "solidny z cegły  lub betonu" i "ma służyć wielu pokoleniom". Kolejne pokolenia niech sobie budują własne domy, tam gdzie chcą, wyglądające tak, jak chcą, odpowiadające ich potrzebom funkcjonalnym. Czyż nie mamy teraz w Polsce kłopotu z tysiącami "kostek" rodem z PRL-u? 

... A zresztą kto powiedział, że drewno nie przetrwa wielu pokoleń? ;-)  

And this is me inside the garage - feels big enough to squeeze in everything I wanted: / Garaż też idzie w górę - jest na tyle duży, że powinien zmieścić wszystko, co chciałam.

The Real Fun starts! / Teraz dopiero się zaczyna!

Update from Tue, Jun 2: Today a bunch of huge trucks invaded our property (one of them actually did not even get in ;-) ). For a moment we've considered organizing a small Monster Jam event. With all the amount of mud after the recent rainfalls, this could have really worked. / We wtorek (2 czerwca) naszą działkę najechała grupa potężnych ciężarówek. Wystarczyłoby akurat na małe wyścigi w błocie ;-). 

All this means that we are starting to build the walls - steel construction of the house itself, and a "traditional" brick garage. 

The "steel team" started to connect the elements... they have quite some work to do, with almost 9 tons of material. / "Tiry" przywiozły 9 ton stali, kilka palet Porothermu na garaż, no i przenośny dźwig ;-). Ekipa od stali od razu zabrała się do roboty...

At the same time, Mr Jacek crew is moving forward with the Porotherm garage walls.

...as you can see, neighbour's house & "garden" right behind the garage does not look too exciting. Current idea is to hide it, using a bamboo forest ;-)./ A w tym samym czasie pan Jacek z ekipą stawiają cegiełki w garażu. 

To, co widać za garażem, to dom i podwórko sąsiada... docelowo ma być zasłonięte kępą bambusów.
